Read below for a statement from the jurors for the 2017 OCAC Juried Student Exhibition, Theo Downes-Le Guin of Upfor and Jane Beebe of PDX Contemporary Art:
We are honored to jury this year’s Annual Student Show at the Hoffman Gallery, which presented a tangible opportunity for us express our admiration of the Oregon College of Art and Craft, its legacy in the artistic life of our region, and the remarkable artists it fosters. We live in a moment when traditional lines between art, craft and design are constantly and productively blurred; OCAC and its students lead the way forward.
In choosing entries we hoped to represent a variety of different ways of making. As the results indicate, however, our final choice was dictated by our responses to the intrinsic aesthetic and conceptual qualities of each work, rather than adhering to a quota by medium or theme. As always, choosing a handful of entries from a large group of engaging artworks is a fraught process. Entrants and viewers alike should keep in mind that we are just two sets of eyes. Other jurors, with other experience and interests, would make different choices.
This year’s entries impressed us with their breadth and inventiveness, not only in physical execution and technique but in ideas and emotions conveyed. Brava to all who took the courageous step of submitting work. We are sorry we are unable to provide specific critique and reactions to each of you, but can assure you that it was an honor and pleasure to review your work; we know visitors to the exhibition will share that pleasure.
Theo Downes-Le Guin is the director and owner of Upfor, a contemporary art gallery in Portland. Representing both local and international artists, Jane strives to mix conceptual work with more personal offerings that are “both intellectually and visually satisfying.”
