REMIXER Opening Reception in Centrum Gallery: March 7!
Creating new contexts for banal experiences, Remixer showcases artwork that combines ubiquitous materials such as detritus, found objects, paint, and papers. Seven artists consider collage as a way to visualize an immediate process of fragmentation and resuscitation, as old materials encourage new connections.
Remixer is motivated by Bourriard’s essay Postproduction where he expounds upon the power of collage to create “new cultural configurations.” Bourriard continues that in our current culture, “the remixer has become more important than the instrumentalists, the rave more exciting than the concert.” In these exhibited works, each material acts as an instrument in the collective orchestra of the finished piece. Found materials allow for broader, more comprehensive dialogues as vernacular materials propel myriad associations within these works.
This group, a literal remix of OCAC alumni and students, processes and reinvents ordinary material to create new contexts and new arrangements, to reconsider the language of painting, craft, sculpture and collage.
Remixer will be accompanied by a zine publication that interrogates the relationship with collage that each exhibiting artist holds, a conversational documentation of collage’s theoretical and physical potential.
