OCAC MFA in Industrial Design Team Participates in NYC's "Beyond the Centerlines" Design Competition

December 15, 2017

The new MFA in Industrial Design class is undertaking its first project ahead of the program's official start on January 16, 2018. The incoming students and Chair are developing a proposal for a competition in New York City to reimagine the medians for 10 city blocks running down Park Avenue, from 46th to 56th Streets.

The medians of Park Avenue, or the “centerlines,” are traditionally characterized by plantings and periodic sculpture installations. Park Avenue medians represent a traditional element of New York City, but also provide an opportunity for reinvention.

While their plans won't be revealed until later, the OCAC team intends to explore a system of elevated spaces and bridges that bring new life to these micro urban spaces, all in an effort to engage the streetscape and pedestrian experience in meaningful ways. The team's goal is to contrast the austerity, relish the contextual promise, and enliven the city.
