OCAC Students Win Big at California Polytechnic State University Design Village Competition

April 12, 2017

cp dv.jpgOCAC undergraduate students and Instructor-in-Residence Jake Sorenson traveled to San Luis Obispo April 7-9 to take part in California Polytechnic State University's Design Village Competition, during which competitors are challenged to design, build, and inhabit temporary structures within Cal Poly’s outdoor Experimental Structures Lab in Poly Canyon. The competition has a long history and has become one of the most anticipated events of the year for the College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED).

OCAC's Team Sala, led by third-year Wood student Cole Sicora-Friesen, manufactured the shelters in advance of the competition. Upon arrival at the site, the components were carried in by hand over a mile-long trek and assembled on the hillside. The team was on-site for three days and two nights, and slept in their shelters.

Team Sala's structure won three of the competition's five awards, including Best Craftsmanship, Best in Show and People's Choice Award.  The competition was attended by 45 teams from 20 schools, mostly comprised of students studying architecture and design. OCAC was the only out-of-state school and only art school competing in the challenge. "Our students did a great job," said Sorenson. "They represented OCAC very well."

The theme of this year's competition was "Essence," and competitors were challenged to experiment with the core idea and focus on an essential quality of their design - light, material, space, or another aspect of their choice.

The students who took part in the fabrication of the structures and traveling to the event were first-year Photography students Oliver Jaskowski and Fenn Paider, second-year Cross Media students Amber Mohr and Meredith Levy, and third-year Wood students John Carrillo and Cole Sicora-Friesen.

Congratulations to the OCAC team for their hard work and outstanding showing in the competition!
