OCAC Faculty Members Among 2018 Painters & Sculptors Grant Recipients

Of the five Portland artists recognized with $25,000 Joan Mitchell Foundation grants, two are members of the OCAC faculty. Congratulations to Lisa Jarrett (OCAC MFA in Craft + Material Studies—Low Residency faculty and OCAC Summer 2018 Golden Spot Artist-in-Residence), and Elizabeth Malaska (OCAC BFA Drawing + Painting Department Instructor). Portland artists made up a full fifth of the 25 recently announced winners of the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s 2018 Painters and Sculptors Grants, which awarded an unrestricted $25,000 to each grantee.

Lisa Jarrett
Lisa is both an artist and a professor of social practice at Portland State University who, in critic Briana Miller’s words, creates “thoughtful work that probes issues of race, politics and identity while leaving room for discourse.” Her work has ranged from the portable art project “Talk to Everyone and Everything About Race,” which encourages conversation and critical thinking, to the intimate “Processed” and “Imagining Home—100 Exercises in Empathy (Part 3),” which both involve hair, including her own. Jarrett has two local exhibits planned in 2019: She’s in a group show, “On Drawing,” that runs Jan. 14-Feb. 8 at Littman Gallery, 1825 S.W. Broadway, and is scheduled to have a solo show this fall at Ori Gallery.

Elizabeth Malaska
The Portland-based feminist painter and faculty member at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft has focused in recent years on redefining how women’s bodies are portrayed. She is a previous Joan Mitchell Foundation nominee, has been honored by the Oregon Arts Commission and Regional Arts and Culture Council, and is a 2018 Hallie Ford Fellow. She is represented by Russo Lee Gallery and will have a show there in November. She’ll also curate a show there at the same time.
