making our mark.jpegSurface Design Association (SDA) will be holding their biennial conference in Portland on August 3-6, 2017. This year marks the organization's 40th anniversary.

This year's conference is entitled "Making Our Mark: Past, Present & Future" and features an array of exciting speakers, balancing thoughtful inquiry and dialog with making and celebration. It also includes numerous events, exhibitions and presentations to promote international awareness and appreciation of fibers, textiles, and new materials. Making Our Mark will be held in partnership with Oregon College of Art & Craft and Portland State University, with sponsorship from the American Craft Council and Friends of Fiber Art.

Saturday, August 5 | Concept + Practice Day at Oregon College of Art and Craft: Attendees can select four 45-minute demos or presentations from seven locations on the beautiful OCAC campus. Opportunities during the conference include exhibitions, 40th Anniversary trivia, social media projects with Becka Rahn, plus mentor/mentee opportunities (available through prior registration.) July 10-August 6 | Surface Design Association (SDA) presents “Crossing Generations: Past, Present & Future”, an exhibit curated by well known gallerist and artist Jane Sauer to honor SDA’s 40th Anniversary. The exhibit will be held at OCAC's Hoffman Gallery on July 10 - August 6, 2017. In creating a vision for this exhibition, Sauer comments, “My desire is to highlight the work of the great mentors that laid the groundwork for what is happening today, mid-career artists, and a look into what the future holds by showing the work of a few emerging artists.”

A reception will take place 4-6pm, Saturday, August 5, during the conference. Participating artists are James Bassler, Lia Cook, John Garrett, Michael James, Glenn Kaufman, Gerhardt Knodel, Jack Lenor Larsen, Anna Carlson, Vic De La Rosa, Karen Hampton, Mark Newport, Julie Sirek, Aaron McIntosh, Nicole Benner, Rena Detrixhe, Molly Koehn, Aram Han Sifuentes, Lauren Sinner, Jodi Stevens, Andrea Vail, and Anel Zarate. Their work covers a wide range of media and approaches and represents a small sampling of what is a rich history and future.
